Tanouye - Kokopelli's Dance

from Kokopelli's Dance by UPEI Wind Symphony

about

Kokopelli is a prehistoric, musically talented fertility deity, with roots in Native American culture. It is usually depicted as a humpbacked flute player. It is believed that Kokopelli travelled from village to village, conjuring rain and a fruitful harvest with sounds of the flute. In the culture, Kokopelli presides over both childbirth and agriculture. He is also a trickster god and represents the spirit of music. Kokopelli's Dance is the first classical composition from a predominantly jazz composer, Nathan Tanouye. The piece begins with Kokopelli's theme played by a solo flute, which is passed through the ensemble in a fugue-like fashion. The music is imbued with the culture of the American southwest and at one point emulates the sounds of a mariachi band. A light hearted, spirited composition, Kokopelli's Dance is a delightful illustration of an old Native American legend.
