Paulson - Epinicion

from Vientos Y. Tangos by UPEI Wind Symphony

/

about

Epinicion is a contemporary, programmatic composition based on a twelve-tone serial row. By definition, Epinicion means "war cry" or "victory cry" and goes back thousands of years to ancient Greece. The conquering tribe would sing this "victory chant" at the end of battle as they scoured the fields sorting the living from the dead, comrade from foe. The composition begins with the sound of the arid wind blowing over the desert. Then we hear the first call of the Epinicion which is a 19 note theme upon which the piece is based, followed by a short development section and the main body of the work. Here we hear the call of the Epinicion a total of six times – solo chimes, solo tuba, and then four other settings. Each time the call is louder, more intense, and filled with more anguish. In addition to these calls of the Epinicion we hear frantic sounds of panic-stricken people as they search the fields discovering that their friends and brothers are among the dead. At the end of this cacophony of sound we hear solo flute, solo piccolo and solo clarinet wandering aimlessly, as if nothing is left.
