Nelson - Epiphanies (Fanfares and Chorales

from Cloudburst by UPEI Wind Symphony

/

about

Epiphanies is a festive piece of extreme dynamic range. It is a series of fanfare-like proclamations announced by brass, woodwinds and percussion which move from dissonance to consonance. It is intended to celebrate a secular, rather than sacred, occasion. The theme, ten notes in length, is cast in the octatonic scale in which the octave is divided into 10 pitches alternating half and whole steps. Interestingly, in this scale each note has a corresponding tritone, the most dissonant interval. Motives from the theme tie each proclamation and contrasting chorale-like statement together. The theme is transformed into diatonic form in the final chorale-like statement.
