Ives - The Alcotts

from The Danserye by UPEI Wind Symphony

/

about

This is a transcription by Richard E. Thurston of the third movement of Charles Ives' Piano Sonata No. 2, the Concord Sonata. The people referred to in the title of the movement are Bronson Alcott and his daughter, Louisa May Alcott (of "Little Women" fame). The work depicts the Alcotts' old Orchard House "under the elms". In the work, references to the opening go Beethoven's Fifth Symphony (played on the spinet piano by Beth Alcott) make up the principal melodic and rhythmic material of the movement. There are two references to "Here Comes The Bride," perhaps suggesting a wedding under the elm trees. Bronson Alcott was a transcendentalist, and Ives depicts Bronson's practice with the occasional use of high notes that are strikingly unrelated to the harmonies and melodies below.
