Hammel - Skyline

from Into The Silent Land by UPEI Wind Symphony

/

about

Evan Hammell played bass trombone in the UPEI Wind Symphony from 2011 - 2015 before moving on to the University of Toronto to complete his Bachelor of Music degree. According to Evan the Wind Symphony’s diverse programming had a very significant impact on his interest in contemporary music and composition, particularly for the wind band medium. Skyline, written in 2018, is an impression of Toronto’s cityscape. The piece attempts to synergize a potentially nonsensical mix of ideas in musical terms (anxiousness and coolness, order and chaos, gracefulness and rambunctiousness, etc.), and does this primarily by building upon a basic aesthetic of perpetual motion and increasingly interlocking layers, patterns and textures.
