Grainger - Irish Tune from County Derry

from The Danserye by UPEI Wind Symphony

/

about

Percy Aldridge Grainger was a collector and de facto saviour of a large body of folk music from the British Isles. The tune of the work, also known as "Londonderry Air" or "Danny Boy," was collected in the mid 19th century by Jane Ross of County Londonderry and published in 1855 in a collection of folk songs. The words were added to the tune in 1913, a parting message to a lover or son going off to war. The work is dedicated to Grainger's long time friend and colleague, Edvard Grieg.
