Barnes - Lonely Beach

from Night by UPEI Wind Symphony

/

about

Lonely Beach is a tone poem about the Allied invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France in 1944. The first half of this tone poem attempts to depict what a single, solitary soldier might have seen on that cold, misty morning. It begins with the sound of wind and waves, then gradually builds as the assault begins. The music intensifies into a frenzy and becomes more complex and confusing until, ultimately, the soldier runs up the beach and is struck by a bullet that kills him. The second half of the work (beginning with the entrance of the female chorus) is a eulogy for all soldiers (Allied and German alike). During this lament we hear distant echoes of shouting and gunfire. The work ends as it began, with the ageless constancy of the wind and waves, reminding us of the ageless constancy of the waste, horror, and tragedy of war.
