Barnes Chance - Incantation & Dance

from Kokopelli's Dance by UPEI Wind Symphony

/

about

Incantation & Dance was written in 1960. An incantation is a chanting of magical words or a formula for casting a spell and performing magic. The opening introduction is full of mystery and expectation. At the fast tempo, percussion instruments quickly enter, one by one, to fuel a rhythmic pattern of incredible complexity and drive. Then the Incantation, consisting of numerous repeated notes, emerges in trombones, horns, and euphonium. Soon afterwards the dance appears introducing new whimsical material but accompanied by some of the figures that were previously established. As other instruments are added, the dance grows wilder and more frenzied. The brass hammer out ferocious snarls while the woodwinds fly in swirling scales. There is no pretty tune but layers of complex rhythmic figures that drive on and on, mounting tension, to a shattering climax of exaltation.
